president obama asked her if you go back to win, leading up to and when he and matt announced his support for marriage equality one, yet many people just asking the question what this would mean. is this going to be good come is this going to be bad quick said we had the doom and gloom scenario suggesting that other politicians follow the president's lead and they will follow at writing to retirement. one of my favorites in which became a pet project of mine and many of you probably got my fundraising for this little race in iowa. just as wiggins was on the ballot for retention in iowa. the three judges on the iowa supreme court that were up in 2008, the national organization for marriage spent $1 million to keep them in and they did so by 10 to 15 points. just as wiggins was the fourth judge on the ballot this november, they spent hundreds of thousands of dollars and they campaigned across the state and head bus trips across the state and we went in with some lawyers that were there in the state to partner in the campaign and we saved just as wiggins. we send a message to the judiciary t
a first to a second obama administration may, of course, begin the day after an election, but it doesn't end on inauguration day. this process is going to continue for some time. as the president's new or old team takes shape and where as necessary, seeks con fir nation, goes through reassessment, definition of priorities and opportunities and as other issues, domestic issues, the fiscal cliff, for example, impacts foreign policy, and let's not forget as the world recalibrates to the changes, or as people say, the lack of changes, here in washington. at the same time, as we begin to talk about foreign policy and a second obama administration, don't forget that history doesn't stop or slow down in the middle east. elections are coming up. israel, jordan, egypt, iran, and elsewhere, we're seeing in front of our eyes more violent change happening in syria. the reverberations felt in every one of those country's borders. elsewhere from beirut to bahrain, it's a low boil, ready to burst out in a way that would affect our interests in very fundamental ways. there's two problems at the far en
of my colleagues on the republican side have been trying to deny law of war detention to the obama administration, and they have openly said this. if you allow this to happen, president obama is going to put you in jail because of political dissent. there are people on my side who are afraid of law of war detention being in barack obama's hand because they think -- they hate him so much, they think that he is going to use a provision to protect us against an al qaeda attack to put them in jail because they disagree with his agenda. and it gets worse. i want you to know this. there has been a statement in our conference that habeas corpus reviewed by an independent judiciary for the intelligence community, the military would have to prove in court by a preponderance of the evidence that the person in question has, in fact, engaged in hostilities against the united states by helping the taliban or al qaeda, that's a requirement of the government. they have to prove that to the judge. that's not really a check on government power because the judge could be an obama appointee. as much
as it appears and is widely reported and claimed by the obama administration. and secondly getting us into the more specific question of drones. this has been the controversial tool that has in many ways gotten us where we are and you have written extensively about it. how would you say we stand on the drum process and pakistan? >> thank you for those questions and for the opportunity to talk to this distinguished audience and distinguished panel. what we have accomplished is osama bin laden himself. if you look at the documents released from abbottabad they fit well with any expert analysis of al qaeda which is al al qaeda is in deep, deep, has a deep set of problems. the al qaeda brand is deeply damaged. he was telling other affiliates of al qaeda not to use the name al qaeda and it would be bad for fundraising and attract negative attention. he was keenly aware of how much damage the drum program was doing and advocating al qaeda move from western pakistan to kunar which is one of the most heavily forested and mountainous areas of afghanistan, difficult or american surveillance to
things? is the dream still alive? at the time, and still today, president obama's in the white house, and he's building a legacy of big government. at the same time, american families are worried about one thing -- if they have a job, worried about keeping it, and if they don't have a job, they are worried about getting a job, but in the last four years, what's happened? there was a focus on obamacare, and just constant spending, spending, spending. when i ran for governor in 2010, florida was in a similar position. we had one of the highest unemployment rates in the country. we lost over 700,000 jobs in the four years before that, our debt was going up, relied on the stimulus, but the biggest thing was we were losing jobs all the time. regulation was getting worse, and so the dream was going away, and florida should be the state where you can live the american dream. housing prices collapsed. everybody was worrieded about the future. having lived the american dream, i ran because i'm worried about it for our children. we have two daughters, 27 and 30. we have a grand son. i'm worrie
? >> sure. look at what's happened over the past four years. president obama came in, gdp collapsing, negative 8%, losing 3 million jobs per month. the economy in free fall. you know, moderates creeing, we're not where we want to be, status quo is not desiredded, but relative to where we were four years, 2% growth now versus negative 8, that's a good direct you want to be in. this is typical of financial crisis. it's different than other kinds of cyclical recessions. look at the reagan recession of 82, for example, and say, that really bounced back within a year, growth shot up in 83 so obama's policies has to be worse than reagans because it's taking longer. it's a different recession. there's a credit crunch, hard to get credit, get the financial sector up and running again, traditionally, those take a long time to dig out of it. great depression, for example, you know, took years to get out of, but fdr came in with unemployment at 25% by the end of the first term, more like 17, people said, hey, that better than we were. keep going in this direction. what we have with the recovery
